Cannes introduces a new event to the Festival this year: the Leçon de musique. Nicola Piovani, the last composer to have worked with Federico Fellini, will discuss his work in this very first Leçon de Musique.
In the world of Italian cinema, Nicola Piovani represents transition, a musical bridge between the legendary directors (Fellini, the Taviani brothers) and the younger 1980s generation (Moretti, Benigni). Piovani learned to play the piano at age 9. He discovered film music in the early 1970s, after his studies at the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. His enviable position as Federico Fellini's last composer placed him firmly in the line of successors to Nino Rota - his clear compositions influenced by all forms of popular music. His work with the Taviani brothers enabled him to explore other musical ambitions, this time in a more symphonic register, including their first collaboration, the unforgettable score of The Night of San Lorenzo. Nicola Piovani -- along with Ennio Morricone -- remains today one of the most renowned Italian composers in the world.
