Director
Emir Kusturica was born in Sarajevo in 1954.
After studying at the Film Academy in Prague (FAMU) he directed several shorts and TV films. He was awarded the Golden Lion at the Mostra in Venice for his first feature in 1981, Do You Remember Dolly Bell? In 1985, he shot When Father Was Away on Business which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In 1988 he made Time of Gypsies (Best Director Award Cannes 1988), followed by Arizona Dream (Silver Bear Berlin 1993). The conflict which tore the Balkans apart pushed him to tell westerners about the history of his country through Underground Palme d'Or 1995 at Cannes. In 1998 he delves into pure comedy with Black Cat White Cat, and was awarded the Silver Lion at the Mostra in Venice. In 2001, he turns to documentary filmmaking with Super 8 Stories which recounts the story of his musical band "The No Smoking Orchestra", during their European tour. In 2004 he presented his latest opus to Cannes, Life is a Miracle. It was on the set of his last film that he decided to build his own village: Kustendorf, where he wants to create a new model life: "One could learn everything there, from science to religion by way of culture and sports."

Director
Film director and screenwriter, Edward Yang was born in Shanghai, raised in Taipei. He was an accomplished Manga artist at the age of twelve. He chose to pursue science and technology, and went on to earn advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering in the US. Following a career in micro-computer design in Seattle, Yang returned to Taipei in 1981 to realize his life-long dream of becoming a filmmaker. The first film project he participated as writer/director, In Our Time (1982), is recognized as the ground breaking film for the Taiwan New Wave. He has since worked in film and theatre. The award winning feature films he made include That Day, on the Beach (1983), Taipei Story (1985), The Terroriser (1986), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), A Confucian Confusion (1994), Mahjong (1996), and Yi Yi (1999), which won him the Best Director's prize in Cannes 2000.

Born on the 22nd of June, 1940 in Teheran. From 1960 to 1968 he started his cinematographic career designing credits and directing advertisements. With a friend in 1969, Kiarostami founded the Cinematographic Department of the Institute for Children and Young Adults Intellectual Development (Kanun) that, in the course of the years, has produced a relevant number of high quality Iranian movies, by directors such as: A. Naderi, B. Beyzaï, D.Mehrjui, E. Forozesh, Dj Panahi, Sobrah Sh. Saless...
By 1970 Abbas Kiarostami directs numerous short films and then features. His favourite subject being 'the child' until 1991. He prefers to work with non-actors in natural surroundings. His work is marked by a keen Chekhovian sense of humour, tinted with poetry. At the end of the 1980s Kiarostami obtains well-deserved international recognition. In 1989 he won the Bronze Pardo at Locarno Festival; in 1992 he won the Rossellini Prize at Cannes for his career; in 1997 "The Taste of Cherries" obtained the Golden Palme at the Cannes Film Festival; "The Wind Will Take Us Away" won the Grand Jury Prize of the Venice Mostra in 1999. On the 13th of November, 1997 Unesco bestowed upon him the "Fellini" medal.
