A Tender Son – The Frankenstein project in Competition

A Tender Son – The Frankenstein Project (Szelid Teremtes - A Frankenstein Terv), presented in Competition, marks the return of Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczò to the Festival. It is in fact the fourth time this young 34-year old director is in Cannes. The film is being screened today at 12:00 and 23:00 at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

Actor / director Kornél Mundruczò was noticed when his second feature film, Pleasant Days, was released and it won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. He went on to a Cinefondation Residency in 2003, where he set to work to write and direct Delta, presented in Competition five years later. In the meantime, the director was selected for Un Certain Regard for Johanna in 2005.

These two films already anticipate the path that the director was to follow in A Tender Son – The Frankenstein project. Destructive family secrets, incestuous relationships, monsters with human faces… So many obsessions that naturally led Kornél Mundruczò right to this modified and modernised adaptation of the famous Frankenstein legend created by Mary Shelley at the start of the 19th century.

The film focuses on the return of a young man to his family home after a long period in boarding school. He looks in vain for some show of love from his parents, all against the backdrop of a sinister police investigation. The film is based on a play that Kornél Mundruczó directed in 2007 with Yvette Biro. The play, which mixed professional actors with amateurs, won three awards at the Hungarian National Theatre Festival
