A few minutes after the closing ceremony for this 63rd edition, the Feature Films Jury made up of Tim Burton, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Kate Beckinsale, Benicio Del Toro, Alberto Barbera, Emmanuel Carrère, Victor Erice, Alexandre Desplat, and Shekhar Kapur spoke to journalists one last time. Extracts.
On the Palme d’or awarded to Apichatpong Weerasethakul:
Tim Burton:I´d never seen any of his films at all, but several other members of the Jury knew of his work. What I really like about Cannes is having access to films that I never usually see elsewhere. This one´s a fantasy film, but it presents things in a way that I´d never seen before.
Benicio Del Toro:I really liked the way that Apichatpong Weerasethakul dealt with the greatest mystery of all: death.
Shekhar Kapur: This film is full of compassion. He conveyed his ideas in a very simple way and led us all to ask ourselves questions about our existence.
On this 63rd edition’s list of award winners:
Alexandre Desplat: This year’s list of award winners is very wide.Together, we’ve succeeded in striking a balance between radical films and more mainstream works. It includes all kinds of films from all over the world.
About the tie for Best Actor:
Tim Burton: What is great about Cannes, is this open-mindedness. We thought that these two performances were both impressive and very different. This was a very hard decision to make.
About their experience on the Jury and the awards:
Tim Burton: Each one of us has been judged before and we know what that means. We all came with respect for the filmmakers. We don’t like to be considered as judges.
Victor Erice: An award is a kind of consensus, it’s like in politics. But time is the true judge. Ideas come and go, and the films remain. It’s possible that in the future of the cinema, there will only be one film that remains from these awards. And if that is the case, I apologise. As Léo Ferré sang: with time…
Emmanuel Carrère: For a writer, it’s tempting to tell everything in detail about what happened over these ten days. The only thing that was missing, from a dramaturgical point of view, was a bad guy.
Kate Beckinsale: We tried to invent more awards, but it wasn’t possible! The films that did not win an award alsohad their supporters on the Jury.
About Best Director award to Mathieu Amalric:
Tim Burton: We really likedOn Tour (Tournée) because it was a film with a lot of vitality. It really took us by surprise. It was one of the first films we saw and it stayed with us right through the Festival.
