European Film Forum 2016

This year will also be special as the Commission will celebrate 25 years of MEDIA with the slogan: "We all love stories". The Commission will organise a public conference on "Financing European works in the digital age", Monday 16 May at 15:00pm, and a workshop co-hosted with EFADs on "How to foster online distribution of European works across the EU", Tuesday 17 May at 15:30 pm. For the first time, showcase events will be organised in the Creative Europe MEDIA stand throughout the Festival.

Cannes is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how cultural and creative industries, including audiovisual and cinema, are a key asset for Europe. They promote our cultural and linguistic diversity and are a precious generator of economic growth and jobs.

25 years of MEDIA programme celebrated at the 69th Festival de Cannes

Since it was launched in 1991, the EU MEDIA programme has invested over €2.4 billion in European creativity and cultural diversity. It has supported the development of thousands of films in Europe and their international distribution.

This year's 69th Cannes Film Festival is a great occasion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of MEDIA, the EU's support programme for the European audiovisual industry. MEDIA-funded films once again feature very strongly in the selection: 10 of the 21 films in competition for the Palme d'Or this year have been supported by MEDIA, including films by Ken Loach, Pedro Almodóvar, Cristian Mungiu and the Dardenne brothers (more details here). In the last 25 years, 40 MEDIA-funded films have been awarded the Palme d'Or, the Grand Prix or the Best Director Award (see factsheet).

Both European Commission Vice-President Ansip and Commissioner Oettinger will be at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday 15 and Monday 16 May to discuss the achievements of MEDIA and how the EU can further strengthen the audiovisual sector, which employs over 1.3 million people in the EU, under its strategy to create a Digital Single Market.

Monday 16 May – Palais des festivals (Terrasse du Festival / Upon Invitation)11.00-12.00 – Commissioner Oettinger, together with the President of the Cannes Film Festival Pierre Lescure as well as the filmmakers Céline Sciamma, László Nemes and Pawel Pawlikowski will hold a press conference on the 25th anniversary of MEDIA.
