Liu Yu Tian (Summer of Changsha) marks Chinese TV and film star Zu Feng's directing debut. The film, about a Changsha police officer tasked with solving a strange murder case, is in competition for the Caméra d’or.

What inspired you to begin work on this film ?

All my confidants. My wife discovered the script. The producer, Mr. Li Rui invited me. Their encouragements are my power. There is no doubt that I will send my most sincere thank to the scriptwriter, Ms. Zhou Yang. It was her wonderful play that moved all of us.

Please describe your working method and the atmosphere on set.

The atmosphere on the set is peaceful and free. Liu Yu Tian (Summer of Changsha) is not only my child, but also the child for all of us. All staff are equal and have dignity on the set and we get along very well. I love them all.

Please share a few words about your actors.

They gave great support to this film which made me very tangled when I made the cutting. Each soul they had created was so attractive to me that I was reluctant to cut out even one single frame.

What did you learn during the course of making this film?

Cooperate with others and get along well with myself.

What are your views on the state of the film industry in your country?

Chinese film industry is booming. We have a lot of successful films both at the box office and at art, which may emerge more in the future. Compared with the maturity of the film industry in Europe and America, we are still young and immature. I hope it will get better and better.
