A Cinema Masterclass by Alfonso Cuarón
ALFONSO CUARÓN, a member of the Feature Film Jury in 2008, director, producer and screenwriter will also give a Masterclass, in the company of film critic Michel Ciment on Wednesday 24th May at 4:30 PM in the Buñuel screening room, during which they will discuss his career in Hollywood and Mexico.
Today, Alfonso Cuarón is considered as one of the most gifted Mexican film directors of his generation, alongside Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu.
After his early career on Mexican television, Alfonso Cuarón left his homeland for the United States. His rise in Hollywood was a rapid one: in 1993, he directed The Little Princess, warmly received by critics and audiences alike. For his first feature film, the director filmed a contemporary adaptation of the classic work of Charles Dickens, Great Expectations (1998), with Ethan Hawke, Robert De Niro and Gwyneth Paltrow.
With Y tu mamá también in 2001, Cuarón returned to Mexico and took his first steps as a producer, establishing his own company, Bésame Mucho, installed at Warner Bros. Highly-acclaimed, the film received many awards, including Best Screenplay in Venice.
In 2003, the filmmaker directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third film in the series. After instilling some darkness in the world of the young wizard, the director turned his hand to Children of Men, a story set in the future and starring Clive Owen.
The science-fiction thriller Gravity, focusing on the character played by Sandra Bullock and made up mostly of computer-generated images, achieved global critical acclaim and commercial success in 2013.
Over the last twenty years, Alfonso Cuarón's highly original, experimental and ambitious filmography has earned him countless international nominations and awards including Oscars for Best Director and Best Film Editing for Gravity.
