As part of the tribute to Egypt (guest country) several events have been held, including the screening of 18 Days yesterday, and tonight Cinéma de la Plage offers Le Cri d’une fourmi (Ant Scream). This film is the work of young Egyptian filmmaker and producer Sameh Abdel Aziz, who also made Cabaret in 2008 and Al Farah (The Wedding) in 2009, selected in Competition at Fespaco 2011.
In Ant Scream, Sameh Abdel Aziz chooses a comic tone to tell the story of Gouda’s difficult return to Egypt after a 10 year stint in an Iraqi prison, complete with torture. No sooner has he returned home than he’s taken away by the secret service and interrogated about what he was doing in Iraq. When he tries to take part in demonstrations, he is made to understand that he is to “live like an ant”. A funny film that seems like a premonition of the Egyptian revolution to come.

The film will be shown Thursday 19 May at 9.30 pm at Cinéma de la Plage.
