Orhan Pamuk was born in Istanbul in 1952. At the age of 23, he decided to dedicate his time and career to literature. His first novel, Cevdet and his sons, was published seven years later. The White Castle (1985) brought Pamuk his first international fame. One of prominent novelists, his work had been translated into more than 45 languages. In 2006, the swedish Academy praised, with the Nobel Prize for Literature, Pamuk "who, in quest of the melancholic soul of his native city, discovered new symbols for the clash and intermingling of cultures." Among many other international awards, Pamuk won 2005 Prix Médicis étranger for his latest novel, Snow. Istanbul, where he resides, will be published in May 2007.
