Even when the world is falling apart there remains something beautiful: youth.
A-yu is the teenage daughter of a merchant who runs a fish-ball business. She has one passion in life: the theatre. A-jin is a young musician who studied composing in Japan, where he fell in love with a Japanese girl whom he followed to Shanghai. He returns to Taiwan. He keeps to himself and becomes inseparable from his guitar. A-yu and A-jin meet and fall in love, but A-yu is under great pressure from her father to marry a doctor’s son which would guarantee her an affluent future. It’s 1945 and Taiwan is under Japanese occupation and the allied forces are bombing Taipei. As part of the population evacuates the city, the lovers are separated but continue to write to one and other. When A-yu and A-jin meet again
