130 ans après sa naissance en France, le cinéma est devenu un langage universel. Il unit les imaginaires et reflète la diversité des cultures. Le Festival de Cannes incarne cette ambition en révélant chaque année des œuvres audacieuses, portées par des cinéastes du monde entier. Il est le creuset d’émotions partagées et de décou- vertes audacieuses.
Dans un contexte de tensions et de repli, il est plus que jamais nécessaire de défendre ce qui nous rassemble. La culture, et en particulier le cinéma, est un espace de dialogue et de résistance. La France porte haut cette exigence, en défendant l’exception culturelle et la liberté de création face aux menaces qui pèsent sur elles.
En effet, notre modèle unique au monde, porté par le CNC, sou- tient sans relâche l’excellence de nos créateurs français avec une efficacité qui n’est plus à démontrer. Les résultats spectaculaires du cinéma tricolore en 2024, tant sur le plan du succès critique que de l’adhésion du public, en témoignent. Dans le même temps, à travers ses dispositifs comme l’Aide aux cinémas du monde, Caméra Libre, ou encore le Fonds pour les cinéastes ukrainiens lancé avec nos partenaires européens, ce modèle encourage aussi de nombreux cinéastes étrangers qui ne pourraient pas créer sans lui. Beaucoup ont obtenu les plus prestigieuses récompenses au Festival de Cannes.
Mais cette ambition, je la porte aussi pour tout le territoire français. L’accès au cinéma ne doit pas être un privilège mais un droit. Soutenir la création, préserver et diffuser notre patrimoine, accompagner les salles et les festivals, c’est garantir que le cinéma demeure un bien commun, vivant et accessible à tous.
Cette 78e édition du Festival de Cannes, présidée par Juliette Binoche, en est une nouvelle démonstration. Grâce à l’engagement d’Iris Knobloch et de Thierry Frémaux, ce rendez-vous essentiel conti- nue d’éclairer le monde et de défendre la grandeur du 7e Art. Que cette édition soit un moment de fête, d’émotion et d’engagement.

The Festival de Cannes embodies this ambition by unveiling bold works every year, driven by filmmakers from around the world. It is a crucible of shared emotions and daring discoveries.
In a context of tension and withdrawal, it is more necessary than ever to defend what brings us together. Culture, and cinema in particular, is a space for dialogue and resistance. France upholds this imperative by defending cultural exception and creative freedom against the threats they face.
Indeed, our unique model, supported by the CNC, relentlessly fosters the excellence of our French creators with an efficiency that is beyond question. The spectacular success of French cinema in 2024, both in terms of critical acclaim and public enthusiasm, is proof of this. At the same time, through initiatives such as the World Cinema Support Fund, Caméra Libre, and the Fund for Ukrainian Filmmakers launched with our European partners, this model also encourages many foreign filmmakers who would not be able to create without it. Many have received the most prestigious awards at the Festival de Cannes.
But this ambition extends to the entire French territory. Access to cinema should not be a privilege but a right. Supporting creation, preserving and promoting our heritage, and assisting theaters and festivals means ensuring that cinema remains a shared asset – alive and accessible to all.
This 78th edition of the Festival de Cannes, presided over by Juliette Binoche, is yet another demonstration of this com- mitment. Thanks to the dedication of Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux, this essential event continues to illuminate the world and uphold the greatness of the 7th Art. May this edition be a moment of celebration, emotion, and commitment.
