Cannes Classics: "Tsigoineruwaizen" and "The Passionate Friends"

Today, Cannes Classics screens Seijun Suzuki's 1980 psychedelic thriller, Tsigoineruwaizen, at 2pm, and The Passionate Friends at 5pm.

Today, Cannes Classics is fêting the centennial of the Kawakita Memorial Film Institute, an agency which promotes the export of Japanese films. As part of this celebration, at 2pm, a brand-new copy of Seijun Suzuki's 1980 psychedelic thriller, Tsigoineruwaizen, will screen in Salle Buñuel. It begins with an encounter between a geisha named Koine and two former university professors. Suzuki, who earned a name for himself as "the magician of image and color," weaves mysteries and creates astounding ricochets in this masterpiece, a feast for the eyes.

At 5pm, enjoy a fully restored copy of David Lean's 1949 film about an all-consuming love affair, The Passionate Friends, based on a story by H.G. Wells, as a tribute to the British director who died in 1991.
