SCIUSCIÀ

( SHOESHINE )

1946 - 01:33

“This story of abandoned children who give themselves up to delinquency and burnt friendship is one of the films that founded Neorealism. While narrating a series of unjust accusations, the story aims at drawing as concretely as possible the real culprit of these tragic misunderstandings: misery.
As often in De Sica's films of that time, Shoeshine revolves around the theme of guilt. Adults are guilty towards children, the cultivated towards the uneducated and the wealthy towards the excluded.”. (J. Lourcelles)
De Sica draws inspiration from two real-life shoeshine boys, who, as soon as they scraped together a few lire, would loan a horse. "It's a pity that neither of them, of course, watched the film. They would attend horse races, football games, but certainly not cinema "(V. De Sica)

THAMP̄

( THE CIRCUS TENT )

1978 - 02:09

Aravindan Govindan’s Thamp¯ is a poetic, allegorical film that explores the transience of human relationships and the rootlessness of the marginalized through the ripples created in the life of a village by the arrival of a circus troupe. In cinéma-vérité style, with no script in hand, Aravindan took a troupe of circus artistes to perform in a village where many locals had not seen a circus before, and shot their reaction as they were watching. They soon forgot the camera and got immersed in the circus. But soon the villagers lose interest and the circus packs up and leaves. The deeply observational, delicate gaze of the camera, captures the pathos of the circus performers and the awe of the villagers, in black and white imagery that stays with you long after the big tent has folded up.

Most of the picture is concert footage of The Band and their guest performers, highlighted by interviews with members of the group, who eloquently articulate their personal involvement in the history of rock and roll.

SEDMIKRÁSKY

( DAISIES )

1966 - 01:16

One of the highlights of Vera Chytilová's filmography is the grotesque moral Daisies (1966). The surrealistic narrative about a pair of young women who decide to be as corrupt as the world around them does not arise from concrete socio-political realities. As a result, the biting account of conformity, petty-bourgeois narrow-mindedness, and the limits of light-heartedness has timeless qualities. Daisies marked the beginning of Chytilová's collaboration with Ester Krumbachová, who contributed to the eccentric costumes and script. The collage-like visual component then gave a lot of space for experimentation to the cinematographer Jaroslav Kucera. It is still an original gem of Czech cinema of the 1960s, which infuriated the communist officials of the time.
