Laura Bowman travels to the Far East to escape the memory of the brutal murders of her husband and young son. Neither the beautiful countryside not the kindness of the native people affects Laura’s depression and emotional numbness. While travelling in Burma, with her sister Andy, Laura becomes aware of the nascent democratic moment in the country and its brutal repression by a military junta. Venturing from her hotel late at night and against the government imposed curfew, Laura witnesses a student protest led by Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of the country’s peaceful defiance of the totalitarian government.
