Giovanna began her artistic career in 1995 at the Bouffes du Nord Theater in Paris, playing in Qui est là?, a Peter Brook creation. In 1997 she plays her first cinema part in The Bride’s Journey, by Sergio Rubini. She got international ecognition with her roles in The Last Kiss by Gabriele Muccino (2002), Facing Windows by Ferzan Ozpetek (2005) and Don’t Tell by Cristina Comencini (nominated for the Academy Award and awarded Best Actress at Venice in 2005). Giovanna continued her cinema career with Les Murs porteurs by Cyril Gelblat (2007), Love in theTime of Cholera by Mike Newell (2007), Palermo Shooting by Wim Wenders (2007) and Vincere by Marco Bellocchio (Competition, Cannes 2009). In 2004, she returns to theater playing in 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane. She produced in the Through the Eyes, a documentary on her father, Vittorio Mezziogiorno (2009, awarded special mention at the Venice Film Festival).
