A Fairfield, Connecticut native, Ryan embarked on her acting career after studying journalism at New York University. She made her motion picture debut in Rich and Famous directed by George Cukor and attracted the attention of moviegoers and critic in her 1986 performance opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun. She has starred opposite Nicolas Cage in City Angels, with Matthew Broderick in Addicted to Love, Kevin Kline in French Kiss, Denzel Washington in Courage under Fire, Andy Garcia in When a Man Loves a Woman and Kiefer Sutherland in Promised Land.
Her additional film credits include I.Q., Anastasia, Innerspace, DOA, The Presido, Joe Versus the Volcano, The Doors, Prelude to a Kiss, Flesh and Bone, Restoration, When Harry Met Sally (first Golden Globe nomination performance) and Sleepless in Seattle opposite Tom Hanks (second Golden Globe nomination).M. Ryan was most recently seen in Kate & Leopold, Proof of Life, Hanging up by Diane Keaton, You've got Mail opposite Tom Hanks - which garnered her a third Golden Globe nomination - , Hurlyburly with Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright Penn.
Upcoming, she will star in In the Cut directed by Jane Campion and she will be seen in Against the Ropes by Charles Dutton. The film will be released later this year.
