Writer (India)
Arundhati Roy was trained as an architect. After graduating she worked for several years as a screenwriter and a production designer.
Her first novel The God of Small Things was published in 1997. It was subsequently translated into 40 languages, sold several million copies, and went on to win the Booker Prize.
In 1999 a second book, called The Cost of Living was published. It contains two essays - The End of Imagination, about the India's nuclear tests, and The Greater Common Good, about the Indian Government's plan to construct of 3,200 dams on the Narmada River in Central India.
In January 2000 she was among the thousands of people who were arrested when they captured the Maheshwar dam site.
After her release, she remains at large in society, educated, but currently unemployed.
