In a poor and backward community in Mexico, Father Nazarín, a Catholic Priest lives a humble life without possession, in an old hostel owned by Mrs. Chanfa, at the expense of the charity of others. Andara, a prostitute, has an altercation with another colleague and is wounded, and Father Nazarín gives her refuge in his room. Accused of killing the woman with whom she fought, Andara burns the inn, while the priest, maligned for supporting the prostitute, throws himself into the streets, unaware that Andara and Beatriz, a woman driven mad by the abandonment of Pinto, her partner, are following him. The priest accepts their company reluctantly and tries to do good but suffers several setbacks.
