André Téchiné, previously a film critic, saw his first film, Pauline s'en va, selected for competition at the 1969 Venice International Film Festival. La Matiouette was screened in the 1983 Un Certain Regard section, as well as Les Roseaux sauvages in 1994 which also received the Louis Delluc Award and the César Award for the Best Film. Jeanne Moreau, Isabelle Adjani, Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve (whom he directed in four films), Juliette Binoche and Elodie Bouchez - whom he discovered and directed in Les Roseaux Sauvage - owe him some of their most interesting roles.
