Juliette Binoche and Abderrahmane Sissako at the Cinémas du Monde Pavilion
Juliette Binoche and Abderrahmane Sissako, who consider themselves world citizens, are the ambassadors of this year’s Cinema du Monde Pavillon located within the International Village, open from May 13-24. Devoted to promoting cinema and talent from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, as well as the Middle East, the Cinema du Monde made a selection of 20 some directors, producers, distributors and film institutions who will participate in a number of round tables, breakfasts and workshops in the hopes of advancing their projects, furthered by a collaboration with the Market.
Kicking off the activities, the Pavilion presented the ambassadors and one of the participating filmmakers, Tunisian Nadia Elfani in Cannes with her documentary, Ouled Lenine, in the first round table.
Juliette Binoche on what it takes to get ahead:
Adaptation is an ongoing, never-ending process. To me, being in the present moment is the most awesome, amazing, impossible, basic, necessary aspect of the actor’s job, in the encounter with the filmmaker. The idea is to create a present. It’s magical. You’re always in motion. The present is immobile, but in perpetual motion. The two of them merge: they don’t oppose each other. So I would say that I’m not quite myself, but I’m not quite someone else, either.
Nadia Elfani on how the Cinema du Monde facilitates their promotion:
The main thing is that they got us screenings here in Cannes that we wouldn’t have been able to afford. I’m talking about formal screenings with trade professionals who come to see the film, who might offer to buy it.
Suddenly, we get visibility… The biggest thing I’m waiting for is to close a deal and sell my film.
At 7:30pm tonight, the entire Cinema du Monde delegation alongside Abderrahmane Sissako and Juliette Binoche will climb the Palais red carpet for the Competition screening of Bright Star by director Jane Campion. The invited filmmakers are either presenting a film or the development of a project.
