Michael Haneke, Commandeur des Arts et Lettres at Cannes

Michael Haneke, winner of the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 2009 for Le Ruban Blanc, was made a  Commandeur des Arts et Lettres by French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand  at noon today at the Café des Palmes.

Juliette Binoche, the actress chosen by the Austrian film-maker for his films Code Unknown (2000) and Caché (2005), was at his side. Androulla Vassiliou, European Commission for Culture, Gilles Jacob, Thierry Frémaux and Véronique Cayla, attended the ceremony.

“The Palme d’Or and this distinction represent the achievement of my artistic journey and the crowning of my love and affection for France”, said Michael Haneke in thanks.
