Midnight Screening of Maniac directed by Franck Khalfoun
Franck Khalfoun presents Maniac, a horror film co-written by Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur, two of his closest collaborators. Today, the trio are considered a point of reference in the horror film genre.
When Franck Khalfoun went to live in New-York, he spent his time behind the camera filming advertising and musical clips. There he would meet Grégory Levasseur and Alexandre Aja. “I’ve been lucky enough to work as part of the same small group for the past 10 years. It’s like being in a rock group.”, jokes the latter. The trio worked together for the first time during the shooting of High Tension. Franck Khalfoun plays Jimmy in this film in which a young woman who has come to study in an isolated villa with her best friend has to flee from a stranger who tries to kill her entire family. Grégory Levasseur penned the film’s script and it was directed by Alexandre Aja.
Other key works to the trio’s name include The Hills Have Eyes, P2, Wrong Turn at Tahoe and Piranha 3D. The three of them now return with Maniac, a remake of the film of the same name by William Lustig. They bring new life to this 1980s film. For Franck Khalfoun, it was important to offer an inventive and innovative re-interpretation of the film: “We decided to tell the entire story from the killer’s viewpoint, something which had never been done in a horror film up until now.”
