Un Certain Regard Q&A: Joachim Lafosse on A perdre la raison
For his fifth feature film, the Belgian film director Joachim Lafosse turned his attention to the Geneviève Lhermitte case, a tragic event that occurred in Belgium when a Belgian mother killed her five children before attempting to commit suicide. The film cast of A perdre la raison includes Tahar Rahim and Niels Astrup (A prophet, 2009) who play opposite Emilie Dequenne (Rosetta, 1999).
What does Un Certain Regard mean to you?
One of my greatest memories as a cinema buff – the vision of “Modern Life” by Raymond Depardon in the 2008 selection.
Why is cinema essential to you?
Cinema is essential: it’s where desires and the subconscious play out. Without cinema, we’d be left only with rational thinking… and how sad that would be.
Which type of cinema or which film continues to inspire you?
Spielberg’s E.T. was one of cinema’s great emotional moments – sometimes I still check to see if there’s not an extraterrestrial being hidden in the garden.

What question would you like to ask to any film director?
Sorry my question might not be the most serious, but I’d ask Nanni Moretti if he’d like to come jogging with me.
You shouldn’t only talk cinema with filmmakers. When cows eat meat they go mad.
What are you expecting from the Festival de Cannes?
I hope the Festival de Cannes will move and transport the public with my film.
The film will be screened at 2 pm and 10:15 pm in the Salle Debussy.
