Portraits of women

From her earliest films, Jane Campion has explored the female condition and set out to give us passionate heroines who typically refuse to conform to the role assigned to them by a patriarchal society. From Sweetie to Top of the Lake, the director, who rejects the label “Feminist”, has come up with dazzling cinematic portraits of women, by turns sensitive, complex, ambiguous, tragic, both strong and fragile, and often driven by their revolt to the brink of madness. Unforgettable characters played by actresses whose performances have always stood out.
