PALME D'OR

GISAENGCHUNG (Parasite) directed by BONG Joon-Ho

The Palme d'or was awarded by Catherine Deneuve et Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Bong Joon Ho said: "I'm sorry I didn't prepare this speech in French, but I didn't expect to win the Palme d'or. I am truly honoured. I've always been inspired by French cinema. I'd like to thank two directors – Henri-Georges Clouzot and Claude Chabrol. The Parasite adventure was very special. I want to thank the entire film team and the production company in South Korea. This film would never have come about without my actors, who have been incredible. I was a little 12 year-old boy, and a huge cinema fan, when I decided I would be a director. I am amazed to have won this prize, which means a great deal to me. Thank you.

GRAND PRIX

ATLANTIQUE (Atlantics) directed by Mati DIOP

The Grand Prix was awarded by Sylvester Stallone.

The Franco-Senegalese director paid tribute to her team, both in France and Dakar. "I think that's what they mean by the 'cinema adventure' I finished this film a year ago in Dakar. It's also a declaration to that city, to the streets of Dakar. I am here, but I'm also there."

BEST DIRECTOR PRIZE

LE JEUNE AHMED (Young Ahmed) directed by Jean-Pierre & Luc DARDENNE

The Best Director Prize was awarded by Viggo Mortensen.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne said: "Thank you to the Jury for this reward, for this film which we wanted to be an ode to life. We filmed a young religious fanatic in these difficult times. In doing so, we wanted to film an appeal to life, to foreignness, to difference. That's also the vocation of cinema. We want to thank young Idir, who played Ahmed so well."

JURY PRIZE EX-ÆQUO

LES MISÉRABLES directed by Ladj LY

Ladj Ly said: "Thank you to Thierry Frémaux for having had the audacity to choose this film. I'm truly touched… the only common enemy of the inhabitants and the police in the suburbs is poverty. And want to dedicate this prize to all Les Misérables in France."

BACURAU directed by Kleber MENDONÇA FILHO & Juliano DORNELLES

The Jury Prizes were awarded by Michael Moore.

Kleber Mendonça Filho said: "This is my 20th year at the Festival. At the beginning I was a film critic and discovered many films. It's strange to be receiving this prize and to find myself on the other side. Thank you!" 

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR

Antonio BANDERAS in DOLOR Y GLORIA directed by Pedro ALMODÓVAR

The Best Performance by an Actor Prize was awarded by Zhang Ziyi.

Antonio Banderas said: "As I walked up the steps, someone asked me how long it had taken to get here. I answered "40 years". I'm very grateful as an actor for this prize, and also for my character. It'll surprise no one that the character is Pedro Almodóvar himself. We've made eight films together. I love him, I respect him. He is my mentor. This prize must be dedicated to him. In the life of an actor, there's a lot of pain, but also evenings of glory, and this evening is my evening of glory. The best is yet to come."

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS

Emily BEECHAM in LITTLE JOE directed by Jessica HAUSNER

The Best Performance by an Actress Prize was awarded by Reda Kateb.

Emily Beecham thanked Jessica Hausner for having chosen her. "It's a magnificent film."

BEST SCREENPLAY

Céline SCIAMMA for PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU (Portrait of Lady On Fire)

The Best Screenplay Prize was awarded by Gael García Bernal.

Céline Sciamma said: "I was about to put an end to my career as a screenplay writer. This prize takes me back to my initial solitude, offset by how the adventure turned out. Let me thank those who breathed life into this film, of my entire team. I owe them my eternal gratitude."

SPECIAL MENTION

To Elia SULEIMAN for IT MUST BE HEAVEN

The Special Mention was awarded by the actress Chiara Mastroianni.

Elia Suleiman said: "Thank you to the producers who contributed to and worked on this film. Many thanks to the Institut, without which the film would never have come into being."

The Caméra d'or Prize was awarded by Rithy Panh, President of the Caméra d'or Jury and by the actress Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi.

César Diaz said "Thank you to the Festival de Cannes, the Jury and the Semaine de la Critique for having invited me. I would like to dedicate this prize to the 250,000 Guatemalan victims and the women who remain standing."

A Special Mention from the Jury goes to Claire MATHON, Director of Photography of the films ATLANTIQUE (Atlantics) and PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU (Portrait of Lady on Fire).

The Jury also noted LEE Ha-jun’s outstanding work as Artistic Director of GISAENGCHUNG (Parasite)
