The 2023 Selection around the world

Their journeys began last May at the 76th Festival de Cannes with their worldwide premiere screenings. Over the following ten months, the films of the Official Selection travelled around the world, gaining the attention of audiences, critics and industry professionals. From theatres to festivals and from festivals to awards ceremonies, they have brought a message and an aesthetic, provoking emotions and debates. With the 96th Oscars on the horizon as the final step of the awards season before attention turns to the 2024 Official Selection, the Festival is delighted by the remarkable paths of the films it supported in 2023.

French audiences were won over

The 2023 Selection was a hit with French audiences, with over 18 million ticket sales in the country. Among these box office successes, five feature films crossed the symbolic threshold of one million spectators, including the 2023 Palme d’or winner: Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet.

An award-winning Selection

Greeted enthusiastically by the general public, the films unveiled at Cannes were also acclaimed by professionals in festivals and awards ceremonies from around the world. Films from the 2023 Official Selection have received over 1700 nominations and around 600 awards since their screenings at the Palais des Festivals last May. A remarkable harvest and one that has been particularly favourable to Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet, The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer, and Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese.

  • A dazzling journey for the Palme d’or: Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet, which has so far tallied 180 nominations and 105 wins. Among others, the film won 6 César Awards (including Best Film and Best Director), 5 European Awards (including Best European Film and Best Director), 2 Golden Globes (Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language), 1 Oscar ( Best Original Screenplay), 1 Goya Award (Best European Film) and 1 BAFTA (Best Original Screenplay). 
  • Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, winner of the Grand Prix at the 2023 Festival de Cannes, has also lived up to its recognition at Cannes, with 55 wins out of 155 nominations. It also holds the 2024 BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and 2 Oscars including the Best International Film Award.
  • The highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, is at the top of the leaderboard with 391 nominations and 121 awards won. The film has been exceeding expectations, with 9 nominations for the Golden Globes and BAFTAs and 12 nominations for the Oscars and Critics Choice Awards.

The choice of film critics from around the world

This year again, film critics from around the world have highly praised the films from the Cannes Official Selection.

In the US,the Los Angeles Film Critics Awards and the New York Film Critics Awards both named Anatomie d’une Chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet as Best Foreign Language Film, and awarded Best Film to The Zone of Interest (and Killers of the Flower Moon, respectively.

At the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the films from the 2023 Selection had pride of place with twenty nominations and further recognition for Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall).

In Europe, The Zone of Interest was honoured with the Best Film and Best Director Awards by the London Film Critics Awards, while Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) was named Best Foreign Film. At the Paris Film Critics Awards, the Palme d’or-winner won three new awards, Best Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller. The film Les Filles d’Olfa (Four Daughters), directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, was named Best Documentary.

Finally, the Lumières Awards were quite kind to the 2023 Official Selection, with 8 of the 13 awards going to films that had their worldwide premiere in Cannes.

European Film Awards – 9 December 2023, Berlin

26 nominations / 10 awards won out of the 17 handed out

For this 36th edition, two films from Cannes led the nominations with five each: Kuolleet Lehdet (Fallen Leaves) by Aki Kaurismäki and The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer. Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet, nominated in four prestigious categories, had a perfect score, winning in each.

Last year, As Bestas (The Beasts) from the Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen was the big winner, coming away with nine Goyas, including those for Best Film and Best Director. This year, the films screened in 2023 in Cannes shared the Spanish honours more equitably.

29 nominations for films from the Cannes Selection, including nine for Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese. The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer (also nominated nine times) won the prestigious BAFTA for Best British Film of the year.

Le Règne animal by Thomas Cailley and Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet were at the head of the list of the films with the most nominations, with 12 and 11, respectively.

In total, the films screened at the Festival de Cannes walked away from the ceremony on 23 February with 15 of the 24 awards. The Palme d’or winner alone took home six.

Among the most nominated Cannes films competing for the famous Hollywood statuettes, Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese leads the way with 10 nominations, most notably those for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall) and The Zone of Interesteach have five nominations.
