Racking up 16 awards in total, the films from the Official Selection of this year’s Festival de Cannes won big at the European Film Awards, whose academy is presided over by actress Juliette Binoche, recently elected to the role. A celebration of European diversity in film, the awards were presented on Saturday 7 December at the 37th ceremony in Switzerland.

Jacques Audiard’s musical comedy Emilia Pérez (winner of the Jury Prize and Best Actress award at Cannes) scooped up 5 awards in the most prestigious categories: European Film; European Director; European Actress; European Screenwriter; and European Editor. With his 10th feature film, Jacques Audiard follows in the footsteps of Justine Triet, whose Anatomy of a Fall enjoyed similar success before going on to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Emilia Pérez will represent France in the race for the American Academy Awards next March. Featured in the In Competition list of this year’s Festival de Cannes, Coralie Fargeat’s feminist horror film The Substance (winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes) was awarded for its cinematography and special effects.

Also honoured were films from the Un Certain Regard list, including two wins for Souleymane’s Story by Boris Lojkine (winner of the Jury Prize and Best Actor for Abou Sangaré at Cannes). Armand by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel (winner of the Caméra d’Or at Cannes) won the Fipresci European Discovery award while Flow by Gints Zilbalodis was named Best European Animated Feature Film.

Last but not least, Nebojša Slijepčević’s The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent—winner of the Short Film Palme d’Or in May—also shone, winning its category.

Huge congratulations to all the teams behind the winning films!

The 78th Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 24 May 2005.

The Official selection will be revealed in mid-April 2025.
