In Theaters in May

Some films from the 2026 Selection are being released in French theaters at the same time as their world premiere in Cannes… or almost! This is notably the case for Electric Venus by Pierre Salvadori, the opening film of this 79th edition, which was screened in more than 980 theaters starting May 12.

The Festival is delighted to see these releases bringing the spirit of the 79th edition to audiences everywhere, allowing moviegoers across France to take part in this celebration of cinema that extends far beyond the Croisette.

The Electric Kiss, by Pierre Salvadori

Out of Competition 2026 • IN THEATRES MAY 12, 2026 - Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a young, popular painter is unable to work since the death of his spouse and Armand, his gallery owner, is becoming exasperated. One drunken night, Antoine tries to make contact with his wife through a medium. Unbeknownst to him, he’s in fact talking to Suzanne, an unassuming fair worker who had snuck into the trailer to steal some food. Suzanne proves to have a gift for deception and with Armand’s help, she begins holding fake séances. Gradually, Antoine becomes inspired again, but for Suzanne things get complicated as she slowly begins falling in love with the man she’s manipulating.

Forsaken, by Vincent Garenq

Amarga Navidad, by Pedro Almodóvar

In Competition 2026 • IN THEATRES MAY 20, 2026 - Raúl is a cult filmmaker in full creative crisis. When disaster strikes one of his close associates, he uses the material to write his next movie. Step by step, he creates Elsa, a director in full writing mode, whose trajectory seems to closely mirror his own. The two filmmakers become two facets of the same character in a game of mirrors where the shamelessness of autobiographical fiction is as revealing as it is destructive. But how far can you go to tell a story?

Crescendo, by Agnès Jaoui
