Even before being screened in Un Certain Regard, Club Kid is among the films that stand out as “cool”. Supported by the producers of Anora, Red Rocket and Pet Shop Days, the film stars the director himself, alongside Cara Delevingne. But who is Jordan Firstman?

Club Kid is shrouded in mystery. To this day, we only have a short synopsis: “A washed-up New York party promoter is forced to turn his life around when an unexpected visitor arrives.”

Before directing this first film, Jordan Firstman had already written for American comedy series and directed several short films. Based in Los Angeles, he rose to prominence on social media during lockdown for his hilarious videos, after which we saw him on screen playing a version of himself with a lead role in the Mexican gay black comedy Rotting in the Sun. He appeared more recently as a sharp-tongued celebrity stylist in the mad series I Love LA by Rachel Sennott.

Club Kid is Jordan Firstman’s first feature film, shot on 35 mm with a very tight budget. In his Top 10 list, which he revealed to Criterion, he names After Hours by Scorsese (“Sorry, straight men, but this and The King of Comedy are the Scorsese films for gays.”), Weekend by Andrew Haigh (“It completely ravaged me.”), Olivier Assayas and Agnès Varda. Such influences are sure to feed expectations surrounding Club Kid.
