European Round Table

On her first visit to the Festival de Cannes, Androulla Vassiliou, the new European Commissioner for Education and Culture, is organising a European round table with representatives of the funding agencies for cinema at the international level.

Meeting in the morning, the various participants from the sector will exchange ideas, share their experiences and discuss the role of different funding systems and the need for public subsidies to support filmmakers. In the afternoon, representatives from the funding agencies will meet filmmaking professionals for a round up of the morning’s discussions and collective brainstorming about the current situation in the film market. The aim is to pool information about various funding programmes, especially those made available by the European Commission’s MEDIA programme.

European support for 21 films in different categories of the 2010 Festival de Cannes

This year, the European Commission’s MEDIA programme has supported 21 films present in the different categories of the 63rd Festival de Cannes, benefitting experienced filmmakers like Bertrand Tavernier (La Princesse de Montpensier), Jean-Luc Godard (Film Socialisme), Stephen Frears (Tamara Drewe) and Mathieu Amalric (On Tour), all in the Official Selection, as well as younger talent. The MEDIA programme has a budget of 755 million euros to fund European film between 2007 and 2013. Funding agencies help with the distribution and promotion of European films.
