LA SYMPHONIE PASTORALE
The pastor of a mountain village discovers, in an isolated cottage amid the snow, a blind little girl, half wild, living in a state close to animality. He already has four children, yet can he reject this “lost sheep” that God has sent him?
He takes her in and undertakes her education.
Years pass. The pastor’s efforts are rewarded. The poor, deprived child has transformed into a beautiful and sensitive young woman: Gertrude, with whom he shares a tenderly affectionate closeness, a closeness he believes to be entirely pure.
However, Jacques, the pastor’s son, returns home after a long absence. There he reunites with Piette, who has always loved him. But the young man pulls away. Gertrude’s beauty unsettles and attracts him.
