© <p><strong>Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof will be in Cannes with two films that have just arrived at the Festival in recent days. The films were made under semi-clandestine conditions, as the two Iranian filmmakers are currently under legal proceedings in Iran and have appealed their sentence of six years in prison and a 20-year ban on filmmaking.<br /><br /></strong>“<em>The reality of being alive and the dream of keeping Iranian filmmaking intact have motivated us to overcome the restrictions we are up against</em>,” Jafar Panahi wrote to the Festival on May 5th.<br /><strong><br /><br />As a result:<br /></strong><strong><br /></strong><img width="200" height="133" align="left" style="margin-right: 5px;" src="http://cdn-media.festival-cannes.com/assets/Image/IRAN/040019.jpg" alt="" /><a href="/en/archives/ficheFilm/id/11179386/year/2011.html"><em><strong>Bé Omid é Didar (Good Bye) </strong></em></a>directed by Mohammad Rasoulof (Iran, 2011, 100') is selected in Un Certain Regard and will be screened on Saturday, 14 May.<br />A feature film, with Leyla Zareh, Fereshteh Sadreorafai, Shahab Hoseini and Roya Teymorian, Good Bye is the story of a young female lawyer in Tehran trying to get a visa to leave the country. Mohammad Rasoulof made the film during the winter of 2010/2011<strong>.</strong><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><img width="200" height="115" align="left" src="http://cdn-media.festival-cannes.com/assets/Image/IRAN/this%20is%20not%20film-02.jpg" style="margin-right: 5px;" alt="" /><a href="/en/archives/ficheFilm/id/11174552/year/2011.html"><strong><em>In Film Nist (This is not a Film) </em></strong></a>directed by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (Iran, 2011, 75') is a Special Screening in the Official Selection, and will be screened on Friday 20 May.<br />This film recounts how, for months, Jafar Panahi has been waiting for the verdict of his court appeal. Through the depiction of a day in his life, Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (a documentary filmmaker and former assistant director), present an overview of the current situation of Iranian filmmaking.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><em>"Mohammad Rasoulof's film and the conditions under which it was made, and Jafar Panahi's diary of his daily life as an artist who is not allowed to work, are films which, by their very existence, represent the filmmakers’ resistance against the sentence they have been handed down. Sending these films to Cannes, at the same time, the same year, when they face the same fate, is an act of courage and also an extraordinary artistic message. Cannes is the international institution that protects them and we are sure that the film professionals from all over the world who have gathered on the Croisette will unite in a natural expression of fraternal solidarity," </em>declared Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux.<em><br /><br />"Our problems are also our greatest resource,” </em>Jafar Panazhi says in his message<em>. "Understanding this promising paradox encourages us not to lose hope, and to continue on our path. Noticed by two New York impresarios, she studied acting at the Professional Children's School. After her debut role in 1988 in <em>Johnny, be Good</em>, she made her name with two international successes the same year: Terry Gilliam’s <em>The Adventures of Baron Munchausen</em>, and Stephen Frears’ <em>Dangerous Liaisons</em>.</p> <p>Since then, she has worked with Philip Kaufman, Phil Joanou, Gus Van Sant, John Boorman, Andrew Nichol, and Woody Allen.</p> <p>In <em>Mad Dog and Glory</em>, presented in Cannes in 1993, she played opposite Robert De Niro.</p> <p>It was with director Quentin Tarantino that she took on her most famous roles, in <em>Pulp Fiction</em>, which won the Palme d’Or in 1994, and then, ten years later, as the heroine in <em>Kill Bill 1 & 2</em>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><br><img height="177" align="right" width="130" alt="" style="margin-left: 10px;" src="http://cdn-media.festival-cannes.com/assets/Image/Jury2011/linn_ullmann.jpg"><br><strong>Linn Ullmann</strong> is a writer. Her latest novel, <em>A Blessed Child</em> (2005) has met with unprecedented critical acclaim.</p> <p>Linn Ullmann is the daughter of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman. She came to the Festival de Cannes in 1997 to receive the “Palme des Palmes” on behalf of her father, Ingmar Bergman, at the du 50th Anniversary Ceremony.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><br><img height="115" align="left" width="160" alt="" style="margin-right: 10px;" src="http://cdn-media.festival-cannes.com/assets/Image/Jury2011/OlivierAssaysok.jpg"></strong></p> <p><strong>Olivier Assayas</strong> studied at the ENSBA school of fine arts in Paris, pursuing his passion for literature, painting and film. During the 1980s, he wrote for the Cahiers du Cinéma and co-authored scripts with André Téchiné for <em>Scene of the Crime</em> (<em>Le lieu du crime</em>) and <em>Rendez-vous</em> before making his first film in 1986, <em>Disorder</em> (<em>Désordre</em>).</p> <p>Since then, he has made more than fifteen films, including <em>Cold Water</em> (<em>L’eau froide</em>), <em>Irma Vep</em>, <em>Sentimental Destinies</em> (<em>Les destinées sentimentales</em>), <em>Demonlover</em>, <em>Clean and Boarding Gate</em>, which were presented at the Festival de Cannes. In 1994, he made his first film and went on to receive a prize at the Venice festival for <em>Bye Bye Africa</em>, his second feature film. His reputation as an auteur was sealed with <em>Daratt</em>, which won a jury prize in Venice. In competition at the Festival de Cannes in 2010, he received the Jury Prize for <em>A Screaming Man</em>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: right;"><img height="175" align="right" width="140" style="margin-left: 10px;" src="http://cdn-media.festival-cannes.com/assets/Image/Jury2011/JudeLaw1.jpg" alt=""></p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><br></strong><strong>Jude Law</strong> started his career in theatre before turning to film. It was <em>Breaking News</em>, selected at the Festival de Cannes in 2004, that made his name with international audiences. He returned to the Croisette with <em>Election</em> and <em>Election 2 </em>(2005-2006), followed by <em>Triangle</em> (2007) and <em>Vengeance</em> (2009).<br><br><br> The jury of the Festival de Cannes will adjudicate between the 19 films in competition before naming the winners of the seven awards, to be presented during the Closing Ceremony, and which will culminate in the announcement of the Palme d’Or.</p>

The selection - because it is also one - allows the Cannes Film Festival to showcase heritage cinema, re-discovered films, restored prints and theatrical, television or DVD releases of the great works of the past. In 2010, a full restoration is initiated by Lobster Films, Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema  and Technicolor Foundation for Heritage Cinema. The digital tools of today allows them to re-assemble the fragments of 13 375 images from the film and restore them one by one. The premiere of the film will take place in May 2011 with an original soundtrack by AIR.<br><br><br><strong>Tribeca Film Festival and the Jury President</strong><br> Famous actor, active producer and accomplished director, Robert De Niro, President of the Jury of the 64th Cannes Film Festival, is also the co-founder of Tribeca Film Festival, born in response to the attacks of September 11<sup>th</sup>. It is therefore as colleagues that Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, one of the co-founders, as well as the whole Tribeca team are welcomed by the Cannes Film Festival to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the event. A Special evening on Saturday May 14<sup>th</sup>, with a screening of <em>A Bronx Tale</em>, in the presence of Robert De Niro and the Tribeca team.<br><br><br><em><strong>The Conformist (Il Conformista)</strong></em><strong> by Bernardo Bertolucci</strong><br> Bernardo Bertolucci, to whom the Festival will present the Palme d'Or of Honor at the opening ceremony, will present <em>The Conformist</em>, a restored print by the Cineteca di Bologna, Immagine Ritrovata and Minerva Rarovideo.<br><br><strong>A Tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo</strong><br> Tuesday May 17<sup>th</sup>, one of the most prominent actors and most famous in French cinema (six films In Competition at Cannes) will receive a tribute by the world of cinema on the occasion of his visit to the Red Carpet. On this occasion, the documentary <em>Belmondo... Itineraire</em> by Vincent Perrot and Jeff Domenech (2011) will be screened and new prints of <em>The Magnificent Secret Agent</em> by Philippe de Broca (1973) and <em>Greed In The Sun </em>by Henri Verneuil (1973), will be screened at the Cinema de la Plage.<br><br><em><strong>Puzzle of A Downfall Child</strong></em><strong> by Jerry Schatzberg</strong><br> Artist of the photo on the 64<sup>th</sup> Cannes Film Festival poster, Jerry Schatzberg (Palme d'Or for <em>The Scarecrow</em> in 1974) will present his first film, P<em>uzzle of A Downfall Child</em>, accompanied by Faye Dunaway.<br> Rarely seen on the big screen, the film will be presented in a new print struck by the studio Universal Pictures. In France, Carlotta Films will release the film next fall.<br><strong><br> 2011, a tribute to the Oversea Territories</strong><br> 2011 is banner year for the Oversea Territories. While the nation pays a solemn tribute to the great poet Aimé Césaire, the Ministry of Culture and the Festival de Cannes honor the island of Martinique, in the presence of director Euzhan Palcy, who will present her film, <em>Sugar Cane Alley (Rue Cases-Nègres).</em><br><br><strong>The World Cinema Foundation</strong><br> In Cannes 2007, at a memorable press conference, Martin Scorsese and many filmmakers from around the world launched the World Cinema Foundation, established to restore and enhance the film heritage of countries which do not have the financial means to do so. Since then nearly twenty films have been saved and screened with a single and powerful idea: a renowned director supports the restoration of a film from the past. This year, the director Fatih Akin will present the little known Turkish film The Law of the Border (Hudutlarin Kanunu) by Lufti O. Akad, on a restored print by Immagine Ritrovata.<br><br><strong>A Kubrick Event:<em> A Clockwork Orang</em><em>e,</em> a restored print for the 40<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the film</strong><br> After several cities in the world, the Stanley Kubrick exhibition is in Paris this spring at the French Cinematheque. The Cannes Film Festival continues the Kubrick event and will screen, thanks to Warner Bros., a restored print of <em>Clockwork Orange</em>, which will also benefit from the presence of its star, Malcolm McDowell and which accompanies the re-release the film in a magnificent Blu-ray edition.<br> Also present: Christiane Kubrick, widow of the director, Jan Harlan, Kubrick's former collaborator and author, in 2000, of <em>Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures.</em><br> The screening will take place Thursday, May 19<sup>th</sup> and the following day, Malcolm McDowell will give a Masterclass to be moderated by Michel Ciment, a renowned expert on Stanley Kubrick. The Masterclass will be followed by the premiere screening of <em>Once Upon a Time... Clockwork Orange</em>, a film by Antoine de Gaudemar and Michel Ciment, produced by Folamour Productions by Marie Genin and Serge July.<br><br><strong>The Rossellini Project</strong><br> Like Charlie Chaplin, Cannes 2011 will launch the restoration project of ten films by Roberto Rossellini (including R<em>ome, Open City, L'Amore, Stromboli, </em>and <em>Germany Year Zero</em>), a collaboration between Cinecittà Luce, CSC-Cineteca Nazionale, Cineteca di Bologna et Coproduction Office.<br> The first of these films is a little known work of Rossellini, released in 1952, between <em>The Flowers of St. Francis </em>and <em>Europe 51: The Machine to Kill Bad People</em> <em>(The Macchina Ammazzacattivi)</em>. Digitally restored from the finest elements of the existing film.<br><em><br><strong>The Children of Paradise (Les Enfants du Paradis)</strong></em><br> After the presentation of <em>Boudu Saved From Drowning</em> by Jean Renoir and <em>The Leopard</em> by Luchino Visconti, Pathé and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé continue to visit the Pathé catalogue and return to Cannes Classics with a presentation of a restored and digitized print of <em>The Children of Paradise </em>by Marcel Carné, with dialogues by Jacques Prévert.<br><br><strong>Rediscovery of Victor Trivas</strong><br> Russian origin, Victor Trivas (1894-1970) had a great career as a writer which led him to collaborate in Germany, France and the USA with G.W. Pabst, Raymond Bernard, Orson Welles and Otto Preminger. As a director he is the author of <em>In the Streets </em>(1933) and, two years earlier, <em>No Man’s Land (Niemandsland) </em>which was blacklisted by the Nazi regime because of its pacifism, following which most prints were destroyed.<br> The French Film Archives and the CNC have found and restored Niemandsland, presented on a 35mm print.<br><strong><br> Invitation to Jean-Paul Rappeneau</strong><br> The cinema of the seventies should also be the subject of attention for rights holders and archives. So too should the work of Jean-Paul Rappeneau (born 1932), whose <em>A Matter of Resistance</em> was restored in 2010. The French Cinematheque, Studio Canal and the Franco American Cultural Fund continue their restoration work with the presentation of <em>The Savage (Le Sauvage)</em>. The film will be screened in the presence of Jean-Paul Rappeneau and Catherine Deneuve.<br><br><strong>Edgar Morin, filmmaker</strong><br> In 1960, the philosopher Edgar Morin and filmmaker Jean Rouch, camera in hand, investigate France and French. The "How do we live in Paris" of 1960 refers to a question we could also ask in 2011, reflecting upon Jean Rouch’s ‘cinema-verite’, a further reflection about the new importance of images in the early 21st century. Critics Prize at Cannes in 1961, <em>Chronicle of A Summer (Chronique d’un été)</em> will be screened in the presence of Edgar Morin. The film is a restoration proposed by Argos Films and will be presented as a digital print.<br><strong><br> Fassbinder's </strong><em><strong>Despair</strong></em><br> The work of the prolific German filmmaker Fassbinder gradually finds its path to the public, in theaters or on DVD. And so this year we screen <em>Despair,</em> a restoration of the negative made possible by Marcus Clarén and Christophe Meiser of Bavaria Media GmbH. This English-language film by a German director will be presented at Cannes Classics in the presence of lead actress, Andrea Ferréol.<br><br><em><strong>The Assassin (L’Assassino)</strong></em><strong> by Elio Petri</strong><br> Four times in Competition at Cannes in the past, multiple award winner and jury member, Elio Petri (1929-1982) is back on the screen of the Palais des Festivals with this film, in which we find the actors Marcello Mastroianni, Micheline Presle. Digital restoration carried out by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino.<br><br><br><br><strong>Documentaries on Cinema</strong><br><br><strong>Films about movies are also films. Like a novelist writing a literary essay on the work of another writer, a filmmaker can tell in pictures the history of cinema. Each year, Cannes Classics focuses on these documentary films, which are also films.<br><br> 2011 Program:</strong><br><br><em>Kurosawa’s Way (Kurosawa, la Voie) </em>by Catherine Cadou (France, 2011, 52 '). This documentary on the life and work of Japanese master filmmaker, who died in 1998, was directed by his assistant and translator Catherine Cadou. It includes many unseen accounts of the work of Akira Kurosawa.<br><strong><br></strong><em>The Look</em> by Angelina Maccarone (Germany / France 2011, 95 '). This film by and with Charlotte Rampling, traces the career of the actress, recalls her singular journey and her artistic affinities in contemporary cinema. Charlotte Rampling is part of the cast in Lars von Trier’s film, Melancholia.<br><em><br> Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel</em> by Alex Stapleton (USA, 2011, 125'). A biography of film producer-director Roger Corman, legendary figure of the Hollywood anti-establishment. © <p style="text-align: justify;">As announced by the Festival de Cannes management at the press conference on April 14, the following events and films will complement the Official Selection.<br /> <br /> <br /> <strong>Egypt, guest country</strong><br /> <br /> Amongst the innovations of the 2011 edition is the idea of welcoming a guest country to Cannes each year; Egypt will be the first country, chosen this year to begin the tradition.<br /> <br /> Egypt will be welcomed in 2011 as a country who, through its revolution of January 25, has informed the world of its need to change the course of history and of its need for freedom, while demonstrating its collective strength and expressing its desire for democracy; it will also be welcomed as a country with a strong history in film, whose presence in Cannes has always been justified.<br /> <br /> This day, when the late Youssef Chahine will be remembered, will serve to underline the strength of Egyptian cinema, which will be represented by directors, actors, producers and technicians.<br /> <br /> This tribute to Egypt will take place on Wednesday May 18 and will unfold as follows:<br /> <br /> -    screening of <em>18 jours</em>, a work grouping the short films of Sherif Arafa, Yousry Nasrallah, Mariam Abou Ouf, Marwan Hamed, Mohamed Aly, Kamla Abou Zikri, Sherif El Bendari, Khaled Marei, Ahmad Abdallah and Ahmad Alaa.<br /> <br /> <em>Ten film-makers, twenty actors, six writers, eight cameramen, eight sound engineers, five set-designers, three costume designers, seven film editors, three post-production companies and a dozen technicians filmed ten short film stories based on the January 25 revolution in Egypt, all under pressure, without a budget and on a totally voluntary basis. Ten stories they had either witnessed, heard or imagined. © <p><strong>Christophe Honoré's film, <em>Les Bien-aimés</em>, will be screened at the Closing Night of the 64th Cannes Film Festival, on Sunday May 22, 2011, after the ceremony in which Robert De Niro and his jury will attribute the awards.</strong><br>  <br> First time in Competition in Cannes with <em>Les chansons d’amour</em>, Christophe Honore returns in 2011 on the red carpet of the Palais des Festivals, accompanied by his faithful musician Alex Beaupin and the film’s actors: Catherine Deneuve, Ludivine Sagnier, Chiara Mastroiani, Milos Forman, Louis Garrel, Michel Delpech and Paul Schneider.<br> They embody characters that draw us into Prague of the sixties, London of the '80s, the world of Sept. 11 and Paris of today in a singular, melancholy and romantic work of art.<br>  <br> With this movie, by one of the world’s most talented and original young filmmakers of his generation, who wrote the screenplay and dialogue of the film, the Cannes Film Festival closes its 64th edition with a bang.<br><br>  <br>  </p>

In its desire to showcase young talent, the world’s biggest film event renews its commitment and faith in the future of cinema every year. Gathered in a single location in the heart of the Palais des Festivals, the Short Film Corner facilitates access to short films and offers an annual programme that can be tailored to individual needs, combining workshops and conferences. This year again, registrations from around the world reveal a growing interest in the short film format, with over 1,900 films registered, representing every continent.<br>  <br>  <br><strong>In 2011, the Festival has created Cannes Court Métrage, which combines the Short Film Competition and the Short Film Corner, to foster the promotion of short films. Designed as a showcase for films and a meeting place for directors, producers and international buyers, Cannes Short Films will provide professionals with a complete panorama of young creative talent from around the world.</strong><br>  <br>  </p>
