© The Cannes Classics program comes to an end this evening at 10:30pm with the screening of a restored copy of <strong>The Adventures of Prince Ahmed</strong> by Lotte Reiniger, dating from 1926 and thus one of the first-ever animated features in the history of cinema. The paper cutouts of princesses and their universe, reenacting impossible love stories, are reminiscent of tales from <em>The Arabian Nights</em>. It took three years for the director to complete the 300,000 B&W images and dye them in color baths. The unpublished French text is read by actress Hanna Schygulla. The showing just before in the Buñuel Theatre at 5pm is <strong>Mikey and Nicky</strong>, a feature film from Elaine May made in 1976, starring John Cassavetes and Peter Falk.

© At 8:45pm this evening, the last musical prelude of this festival features DJ Roudoudou spinning his personal mix of 70s film sound tracks. <strong>Kagemusha</strong> by Akira Kurosawa, Palme d’Or in 1980, will follow in a 9:30 pm showing at the outdoor theatre Cinema de la Plage.

© Within the framework of the 5th edition of Europe Day, a meeting between the representatives of the European distributors network – which is made up of close to 50 distributors from 18 countries - and Viviane Reding with other ministers was organized. The association, Europa Distribution, created in March 2006 at the bidding of independent French distributors, was officially launched at the Cannes Festival in May 2006. Members were able to speak out and confirm their ambitions in view of the digital age and the saturation of American cinema by seeking concerted actions and putting into place new strategies for VOD. Furthermore, they have created a web site that is a platform for the exchange of information and experiences, and they emphasized the importance of collaboration and interaction between the different independent distributors in Europe. <p> Concluding the meeting, Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission, responsible for Information Society and Media, congratulated the members for a “<em>highly energetic and extraordinary organization</em>” and that the study prepared by Europa Distribution “<em>would become an important document for the future talks to be held in Portugal</em>” and “<em>would be helpful to national governments in resolving specific problems concerning distribution</em>.” </p>
