The first of November was the deadline for a film to be submitted as a candidate for “Best International Feature Film” for the 2022 Oscars. This marks the start of a competition that will culminate on 27 March 2022 in Los Angeles during the 94th Academy Awards organised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Among the films vying for a nomination, the Festival de Cannes is proud to announce that 18 were a part of the Official Selection. They have been chosen by their countries to be their cinematographic representatives. These are films that bear witness to the quality, diversity and vitality of cinema from around the world.
On 8 February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the list of films nominated for the 2022 Oscars. Among the nominees are 3 films that debuted at the Festival and have frequently received awards from around the world (For more info ► The 2021 Selection around the world):
- DRIVE MY CAR by Ryusuke Hamaguchi: best motion picture of the year, achievement in directing, best international feature film of the year, adapted screenplay
- VERDENS VERSTE MENNESKE (THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD) by Joachim Trier: best international feature film of the year, original screenplay
- FLEE by Jonas Poher Rasmussen: best international feature film of the year, best animated feature film of the year, best documentary feature
After the success of Bong Joon-ho's Palme d'or winning PARASITE in 2019 (Oscars for best film, best director, best international feature film and best screenplay) and Thomas Vinterberg's DRUK (ANOTHER ROUND) in 2020, it's time for Ryusuke Hamaguchi's DRIVE MY CAR (Best Screenplay Award at the 2021 Festival de Cannes) to vie for the top spot and maybe come away with the Oscar for best film on 27 March.
With a total of 9 nominations, the films from the 2020 and 2021 Selections have distinguished themselves in particular in the Best International Feature Film category, one largely dominated by Cannes films this year, with 3 of the 5 nominees having debuted on the Croisette.
And bravo to all those films pre-selected earlier in the year and whose adventures are continuing in theatres and beyond.
