Imprisoned in Istanbul since October 2017, the Turkish philanthropist and benefactor Osman Kavala was sentenced to life in prison on 25 April 2022. He has always maintained his innocence. He is accused of attempting to overthrow the government. The judges indicated that he shall not be eligible for parole.

In 2010, the animated short film Chienne d’Histoire (Barking Island) won the Palme d'or at Cannes. This film, directed by Serge Avédikian, was supported by the foundation created by Osman Kavala, "Anadolu Kültür". Osman was in attendance in the theatre, smiling and happy, seated next to Serge at the Closing Ceremony.

At the time, the world seemed to be moving towards peace and reconciliation. Osman Kavala enthusiastically spent a lot money and made great contributions to facilitating cultural dialogue between the peoples who share a common history and make up the population of Turkey today.

It is unacceptable to think that a man who has devoted so much energy to peace, art and reconciliation may languish in prison for the rest of his life.
