Presented in Competition today, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days is the second feature unveiled at Cannes by young Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu. Occident was
presented in 2002. His latest film takes the spectator back to Romania’s recent past, revealed through the story of a young woman, Gabita, who wants an abortion despite the fact that it is
illegal. With the help of a friend, Ottila, they call on a certain Mr. Bebe. However, neither are aware of the terrible consequences ahead…

“The screenplay starts from the kind of personal experience that people usually don’t share with others,” explained the director. “It is the story of
consequences that are more often untold, even hidden, but common to many. Above all it is an abortion story from a period of time when such an act was an act of protest against a regime which
sought to impose discipline by banning abortion.”
