Cannes Classics offerings: Yang, Franju, Visconti

Cannes Classics presents restored prints of three greats.

Cannes Classics is proud to welcome Martin Scorsese as its honorary president in 2009. The program was created in 2004 to accompany the features premiering in the official Selection with a selection of rare and restored masterpieces of the past, many of which are being re-released in theaters or on DVD. For example, the three features from different horizons screening today are all due to be available again soon. At 3 pm, Buñuel Theater will be showing a never-released version of Brighter Summer Day (1991) by Taiwanese director Edward Yang, restored by the World Cinema Foundation. At 8 pm, the screenings continue, with Gaumont’s restoration of Eyes Without a Face by Georges Franju. Lastly, at 7:45 pm in the Salle du Soixantième, festivalgoers can catch Senso (1954), a dramatic 19th-century love story directed by Luchino Visconti, now digitally restored by StudioCanal and Centro Sperimentale de Cinematografia.
