Press Conference: “Don’t Look Back”

Marina de Van, Sophie Marceau, and Monica Belluci meet the press

The official Don’t Look Back press conference was an opportunity for director Marina de Van, actors Sophie Marceau, Monica Belluci, and Andrea Di Stefano, and producer Patrick Sobelman to enlarge on their artistic intentions to the journalists present. Excerpts follow.

The actresses, on becoming acquainted with their parts: Sophie Marceau: " I liked the genre. I liked everything that this film dealt with. I liked the simple reading of the script, on an immediate level, about a woman who loses her way and doesn’t know where she’s going, who becomes introspective, the way many people do in mid-life. And I also liked all the different drawers you can pull out: your relationship to your childhood, your fears and anxieties, and your quest for identity. These are all themes which are attractive to us as actors."

Monica Belluci : "I saw Marina de Van’s first film, Skin, and I was very moved by the way she makes films, and by her whole world, a very special, controlled world. I wanted to get into this world. I was very curious to work with her. And when I saw that Sophie was going to be acting, too, I was delighted to be part of this trio of women."

Marina de Van on what drives her to make films:
"I found it an interesting challenge to change one woman into another. I can’t commit to a project unless it presents a challenge, something spectacular to accomplish. I need an ambitious goal. Even if I fail to reach it, it’s something that drives my desire and my dream. I’m not interested in showing the audience a formula, something easy or already done. I hope my film will touch people. It involves challenges, daring, and also negative reactions."
