Press conference: “The Imaginarium Of Docteur Parnassus”

Terry Gilliam talked about "Docteur Parnassus" with the international press

At the press conference for the Out-of-Competition feature The Imaginarium Of Docteur Parnassus , cast and crew were present with director Terry Gilliam: actors Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield, Verne Troyer, cinematographer Nicola Pecorini and producers Amy Gilliam and Samuel Hadida. Highlights follow.

Terry Gilliam on Heath Ledger :
"When Heath died, I went down to Los Angeles and spent a day with the family, and we started crying, then we started laughing. It’s going to be a positive thing, a celebration of Heath. And that’s what we did. I didn’t spend a lot of time telling my plans exactly, but they knew that Johnny and Jude and Colin were going to come onboard and they were delighted. So they’ve been completely supportive, and they haven’t seen it yet so it’s still a surprise for them."

Terry Gilliam on the storytelling concept of the film:
"I think we’re living in an age of storytelling that is all over the place and big lies are told daily. I’m not so clear in my own thinking about the good and evil of storytelling. I just know that storytelling and the restructuring of the world through stories is vital. In a sense, what I’m talking about is using one’s imagination to expand the possibilities and the view of the world that people have and that’s what’s important to me…The genesis, I think I just decided I wanted to do something original rather than adapting books that I love."

Verne Troyer on working with Terry Gilliam :
"He gives you a lot of insight on what the character is, and then lets you explore that in your own way. When you have a director like him, it makes it so much fun. I worked with Terry one other time in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, just a small part, no pun intended. I got to know him then, so I was just so grateful when he offered me this role in the film."
