Day Two of the Cinéfondation
Today the Cinéfondation presents two programmes of short and medium length films by young directors from all over the globe.
The first screenings start at 11.00 in the Salle Buñuel with Ja Vec jesam sve on sto zelim da imam (I Already am Everything I Want to Have), a solitary journey through the streets of Belgrade. The 23 year old director, Dane Komljen, graduated from the Serbian School of Dramatic Arts, and this is his graduation film. Another student of this school, Pavle Vuckovic, won the Premier Prix de la Cinéfondation in 2003 with Bezi zeko bezi. When the latter heard about Dane Komljen’s Cannes selection, he only had one piece of advice: “he told me to go and buy a suit!”, the young filmmaker recounts.
Los minutos, las horas by Janaìna Marques Ribeiro is a film from the International Film and Television School of Cuba, and is the director’s second entry to the Cinéfondation. While the not a complete novice, Los minotos, las horas is her first film shot in 35 mm.
Coucou-les-nuages by the frenchman Vincent Cardona closes the morning. The filmmaker, who describes his short film as “a science-fiction comedy”, explains: “I’m not sure about the term, but it’s something of this sort. It’s the story of a group of people who try to send a probe into space.”
The day’s second programme of short films will start at 14.30, again in the Salle Buñuel. Hinkerort zorasune (The Fifth Column) is the new film by Vatche Boulghourjian, student at New York University, originally from Lebanon. This regular at film festivals has already been to the Amsterdam Documentary Film Festival and the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.
The unusual Miramare by Michaela Müller completes the programme. This animated film film using paint on glass, is the result of the director’s twofold passion: “I trained as a painter, and I learned to express myself through paint, but I love cinema so much that I wanted to marry the two. This way I have complete control over the film.” On the subject of her first visit to Cannes, Michaela Müller admits “being a bit scared of the red carpet!”
Finally, Taulukauppiat (The Painting Sellers) by Juho Kuosmanen closes this second selection. It’s not the Finnish director’s first time at the Festival, two years ago he already presented his second short film, Signalisations des Routes (Road Signs). A journey he didn’t regret: « when you’ve been to Cannes, your film is wanted everywhere, it really helps. »
