American director Philip Kaufman will be giving the lesson on directing, hosted by Michel Ciment, this Friday.

Screenwriter, director and producer, Philip Kaufman has built his career on both independent and studio films, as well as genre and big budget films.

His first film Goldstein, is a satirical and personal film, that he wrote, directed and produced. The film was selected for Critics’ Week in 1964 and won the Prix de la Nouvelle Critique. Two years later he was in Hollywood, under contract with Universal, where he co-wrote the original story of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with George Lucas.

In the 70s, he produced more genre films, such as The Legend of Jesse James and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a remake of the classic science fiction film by Don Siegel. Thanks to the success of the latter, in 1978 he followed this up with more ambitious projects such as The Right Stuff, a chronicle of the U.S. space programme adapted from the novel by Tom Wolfe, which won four Oscars, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, based on the novel by Milan Kundera, which met with international success.

The Masterclass with Philip Kaufman will take place on Friday 25th May at 14:00 in the Buñuel Theatre.
