Press Conference of the Feature FilmsJury - Closing Ceremony
Meet the Feature Film Jury
After announcing the Awards, the members of the Jury of the 72nd Festival de Cannes attended a press conference. Yórgos Lánthimos, Alice Rohrwacher, Robin Campillo, Elle Fanning, Maïmouna N’diaye, Enki Bilal, Paweł Pawlikowski, Kelly Reichardt and the President Alejandro G. Iñárritu commented on the choices that made up the winners for the 2019 awards.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu, on the unanimous choice of the Palme d’or
Gisaengchung (Parasite) was a unique experience and we all shared in this mystery. We were all fascinated by this film and that fascination grew ever stronger.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu, on the social aspect of the prizewinners
Most of the films are about social justice. Most of the themes in the prizewinning films are pressing – the world is reflected in art, and the ambition of art is to pick up on the frequencies that take us into the future. All that is expressed in the language of cinema. I think that film must try to raise social awareness throughout the world.
The director insisted however on one point: there is no political message in this collection of prizewinners. We didn't want to convey a message. Our decision was a cinematographic one, not a political one. Cinema tells its own story.
Enki Bilal, on the Grand Prix awarded to Atlantique (Atlantics)
It's a film that seduced us, and didn't let go. It has poetry, an uncompromising gaze, and it is also a film of great humility.
Alice Rohrwacher on the same subject
It is a symbolic treatment, a film that speaks of a tragedy that is experienced every day.
Elle Fanning
This film touched us to the very end. It's a kind of fable. We felt that it was extremely valuable and that we had to defend it.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu on Elle Fanning's participation in the Jury
It was a gift for all of us to have someone who was born around the year 2000 in the Jury. She brought a freshness and an honesty that inspired us, and we saw things differently through her presence.
