Nine years after the highly acclaimed first instalment in Korea, which was a huge box-office success, director Ryoo Seung-wan reunites with detective Seo Do-cheol for a new explosive detective story. The film is being shown at the Midnight Screening.

Detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) and his major crimes unit decide to recruit young officer Park Sun-woo (Jjung Hae-in) to track down a serial killer who has plunged the nation into turmoil. When the murder of a professor reveals connections to previous cases, suspicions around the serial killer become more intense as he publicly taunts the duo and their team by announcing his next victim.

This sums up the plot of Ryoo Seung-wan’s new feature film. The director explains that for this new instalment, he wanted to reinvent the adventures of detective Seo Do-cheol. I, The Executioner portrays “disillusioned citizens amidst an avalanche of incidents, criminals exploiting this disillusionment, and individuals committing further crimes because of their distorted values”, explains the director.

Through this feature-length film, the Korean director highlights the prominent role of “fake news” and the growing power given to algorithms within Korean society. “The film also encourages viewers to reflect on the blurred lines between good and evil, and the importance of distinguishing between them in today’s society”, he concludes.
