It was the law of the village that when a person became 70 years old, they must go to the top of the mountain and stay for the rest of their lives. Orin is 69 and before she goes she must find her widowed son a new wife. Then, in the late autumn, her son must take her to the mountain. She was resigned to her fate, but her son is torn with grief as he carries his mother to the summit. Returning to the village, now covered with snow, he suddenly realizes that the life still goes on regardless of the hardships one must face.
