The 2022 Selection around the world

Following on from their world preview showings at the 75th edition of the Festival de Cannes 2022, the Official Selection films embarked on a tour around the globe, going from strength to strength in cinemas and awards ceremonies. While we wait to find out what the 76th edition has in store for us, we take a look back over the remarkable journeys undertaken by the films first revealed to us last year on the Croisette.

A snapshot of the most awarded films

To date, the 2022 Official Selection boasts a grand total of 565 prizes and awards, and over 1,400 nominations around the world.

  • Coming top of the charts is Joseph Kosinski’s hotly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, which had proved a hit at its première in Cannes and has already garnered 85 awards, six Oscars 2023 nominations and four BAFTA nominations.
  • With 75 awards and 215 nominations under its belt — including eight at the Oscars — Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is the 2022 Selection’s second most awarded film. The feature-length biopic recently scooped the Golden Globe and the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Austin Butler).
  • After the success of his first film, Girl, winner of the 2018 Caméra d’or, the Belgian director Lukas Dhont had a winning return to Cannes in 2022 with Close. Winner of the 2022 Grand Prix at the Festival de Cannes, the film’s triumph was confirmed with a nomination as Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars and at the 2023 César Awards.

A Selection acclaimed by critics around the world

For yet another year, the French, European and international press gave their stamp of approval to Cannes’ 2022 Selection. EO by Jerzy Skolimowski was crowned Best Foreign Language Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Critics.

The Critics’ Choice Awards, meanwhile, showed their appreciation for:

  • Elvis by Baz Luhrmann: 7 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Austin Butler)
  • Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinski: 6 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Tom Cruise)
  • Close by Lukas Dhont: Best Foreign Language Film
  • Armageddon Time by James Gray: Best Young Actor (Banks Repeta)
  • Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund: Best Comedy

In France, the 2022 Official Selection was a roaring success with the Lumières Award, with the Selection’s films winning eight of 13 awards.

  • Pacifiction by Albert Serra: Best Director, Best Actor (Benoît Magimel) and Best Cinematography
  • The Night of the 12th by Dominik Moll: Best Film and Best Screenplay
  • Forever Young by Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi: Most Promising Actress (Nadia Tereszkiewicz)
  • Little Nicholas: As Happy As Can Be by Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre: Best Animated Film
  • As Bestas by Rodrigo Sorogoyen: Best International Co-Production

The 2022 Selection’s box office success stories

As well as meeting with acclaim in festivals and awards ceremonies, some of the films were box office sensations in France and around the world.

Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis were 2022’s second and seventeenth (respectively) biggest global hits in 2022, and French films managed to make waves too. November by Cédric Jiménez broke through two million tickets sold in France, making it the second biggest box office seller in the country. Masquerade by Nicolas Bedos and The Innocent by Louis Garrel did the country proud too, with over 800,000 and 700,000 ticket sales, respectively. Another stunning surprise came from Dominik Moll’s The Night of the 12th, which has exceeded the 500,000-ticket mark by the end of running. As for the 2022 Palme d’Or-winning Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund, it delighted over 560,000 cinema-goers across France.

Highlight events

César Awards – 23 February 2023, Paris

This year, the 2022 Official Selection swept the board when it came to César 2023 nominations, with the Festival’s films single-handedly accounting for a total of 60 nominations, and La Nuit du 12 (The Night of the 12th) emerging as the winner:

  • La Nuit du 12 (The Night of the 12th) by Dominik Moll: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adaptation, Best Supporting Actor (Bouli Lanners), Most Promising Actor (Bastien Bouillon), Best Sound
  • L’Innocent (The Innocent) by Louis Garrel: Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Noémie Merlant)
  • Pacifiction – Tourment sur les îles (Pacifiction) by Albert Serra: Best Actor (Benoît Magimel), Best Cinematography
  • Les Amandiers (Forever Young) by Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi: Most Promising Actress (Nadia Tereszkiewicz)
  • As Bestas (The Beasts) by Rodrigo Sorogoyen: Best Foreign Film

The Academy Awards – 12 March 2023, Los Angeles

Three films from the 2022 Selection were in competition for the Best Picture Oscar, the results of which were revealed during the ceremony on 12 March: Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis and Triangle of Sadness. They had 6, 9 and 3 nominations, respectively. All in all, the films from Cannes were represented in 16 categories for a total of 21 nominations.

  • Elvis by Baz Luhrmann: 9 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Austin Butler)
  • Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinski: 6 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund: 3 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director
  • Close by Lukas Dhont: Best International Feature Film
  • EO by Jerzy Skolimowski: Best International Feature Film
  • All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen: Best Documentary Feature Film
  • The Pupils by Alice Rohrwacher: Best Live Action Short Film

Top Gun: Maverick won the Oscar for Best Sound during this 95th Academy Awards ceremony.

BAFTAs – 19 February 2023, London

The British Academy Film Awards 2023 ceremony took place on 19 February, with many films that were first revealed at Cannes 2022 up for awards:

  • Elvis by Baz Luhrmann: 9 nominations, including Best Film and Best Actor
  • Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinski: 4 nominations, including Best Cinematography
  • Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund: Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Original Screenplay
  • Decision to Leave by Park Chan-wook: Best Director and Best Film Not In The English Language
  • Corsage by Marie Kreutzer: Best Film Not In The English Language
  • Moonage Dream by Brett Morgen: Best Documentary
  • All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen: Best Documentary

Among them, Elvis directed by Baz Luhrmann won 4 BAFTA awards including the Best Actor Award for Austin Butler.

Golden Globes – 11 January 2023, Los Angeles

The 80th Golden Globes ceremony took place on 11 January and saw Austin Butler win the much coveted Best Actor In A Motion Picture Award for his performance in Elvis. Decision to Leave, Triangle of Sadness and Top Gun: Maverick also starred in the line-up of films shortlisted for the Golden Globes.

Goya Awards – 11 February 2023, Seville

The Spanish Goya Awards ceremony took place on 11 February 2023, and this year Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts triumphed, winning nine awards:

  • Best Film
  • Best Director
  • Best Actor for Denis Ménochet
  • Best Supporting Actor for Luis Zahera
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Editing
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Sound

Additionally, the Goya for Best European Film went to Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, presented in Selection at Cannes in 2021.

European Film Awards – 10 December 2022, Reykjavík

The 35th ceremony for the European Film Awards 2023 was held on 10 December 2022 in Iceland, with this edition’s big winner emerging as none other than 2022 Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness. Yet other Cannes films scooped awards here, too:

  • Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund: 4 awards, including Best Film and Best Actor (Zlatko Burić)
  • Mariupolis 2 by Mantas Kvedaravicius: Best Documentary Film
  • Corsage by Marie Kreutzer: Best Actress (Vicky Krieps)
  • EO by Jerzy Skolimowski: Best Original Score
  • Burning Days by Emin Alper: Best Editor
  • Exterior Night by Marco Bellocchio: Best Innovative Storytelling
