Director Rachid Bouchareb and his team took part in a press conference for Hors la Loi, screened in Competition this morning. Chosen excerpts.

Rachid Bouchareb, reacting to accusations that the film is anti-French.
I’m surprised. The film is intended to open a debate in a calm cool and collected manner, not in a war zone. I knew that people were still quite prickly about the colonial past. But I never thought that the film would arouse such alarm! I’m surprised at what people have said without even having seen the movie.
The reaction to Rachid Bouchareb’s controversial films in Algeria.
Contrary to what people might think, in Algeria I’ve never been asked to change anything in my films. No matter how violent they may be. I felt I should stress that.

Political violence as a universal theme for Rachid Bouchareb
My film is about political violence. It’s that kind of violence that the film concentrates on particularly. But it wasn’t just in the Algerian revolution; it’s true for revolutions all over the world.
Rachid Bouchareb, answering a question about the choice of the title.
To Jamel Debbouze: You can explain that, you. How many times have you been arrested? (laughter)
To journalists: Hors la loi (outlaw), it’s something, a term, you find often in the documents of that time. We came across it all the time in the archives. Besides, I wanted a title that sounded like a western, so Hors la Loi (Outlaw) is pretty good.
