I’m surprised. The film is intended to open a debate in a calm cool and collected manner, not in a war zone. I knew that people were still quite prickly about the colonial past. But I never thought that the film would arouse such alarm! I’m surprised at what people have said without even having seen the movie.

My film is about political violence. It’s that kind of violence that the film concentrates on particularly. But it wasn’t just in the Algerian revolution; it’s true for revolutions all over the world.

To journalists: Hors la loi (outlaw), it’s something, a term, you find often in the documents of that time. We came across it all the time in the archives. Besides, I wanted a title that sounded like a western, so Hors la Loi (Outlaw) is pretty good.
