In 1949 Jean Rochefort joins the Dramatic Arts Centre on the rue Blanche, followed by the National Conservatory. In 1953 he works with the Grenier Hussenot company for 7 years, while at the same time acting in live television dramas.
In 1960, along with Delphine Seyrig, he takes on numerous theatrical roles, written primarily by English-speakers: Pinter, Sanders, Peter Nichols, etc.
At the TNP he acts in Loin de Rueil by Raymond Queneau.
From 1970 on his participation in film increases, leaving his work theatre behind.
He returns sporadically to the theatre as actor and director, and appeared notably in "ART" by Yasmina Reza at the Hébertot Theatre in 1998.
Jean Rochefort has directed two short films and a medium length film on the actor Marcel Dalio.
He has acted in more than 80 films with directors such as Philippe de Broca, Jacques Deray, YvesRobert, Bertrand Tavernier, Bertrand Blier, Pierre Schoendoerffer, Alain Cavalier, Régis Wargnier, Patrice Leconte, Francis Veber, Fabio Carpi, Robert Altman and Alejandro Agresti.
He has received 3 Césars: in 1975 for his work in the film Que la fête commence by B. Tavernier; in 1978 for Le Crabe tambour by P. Sschoendoerffer and an Honorary César in 1999 for his life's work.
