Carlos, Assayas dissects “The Jackal”

Based on the life of Carlos, the famous Venezuelan terrorist, the new feature film by Olivier Assayas is presented this Wednesday Out of Competition (Grand Théâtre Lumière, 12:00).

Three years after Boarding Gate (2007), his last film screened in Cannes, Olivier Assayas is back with the biopic of one of the most famous figures in international terrorism. The film lasts five and a half hours and it will be screened in a shortened version when it goes to the box office. Inspired by the investigative work of journalist Stephen Smith, Carlos was initially shot for a three-part series for Canal+.

The French director chose the Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez, to  interpret the role of the terrorist from Caracas based on his performance in Domino, by Tony Scott (2005). The actor has also filmed since then in La Vengeance dans la peau (2007), and Che, in Competition in Cannes in 2008.

 
Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, nicknamed Carlos, is known for a series of terrorist attacks perpetrated between 1974 and 1994. Form his prison cell in France, where he is serving life sentence, “The Jackal,” another nickname for the terrorist, has tried in vain to prohibit the distribution of the film.
