Daniele Luchetti: “My film expresses a certain leniency towards humankind”

Italian director Daniele Luchetti and the cast from La Nostra Vita (Our Life), a feature length movie being presented in Competition this Thursday, answered questions from journalists at their press conference. Some excerpts.

Daniele Luchetti talks about the characters in his film:
I wanted to have these characters develop by setting them in a contemporary political context. In Italy, money is increasing displacing feelings and ideologies. By focussing on money, Claudio wants to take his revenge on life. Though this explosion of energy leads to nothing, it does allow him to change his relationships with other people.

Daniele Luchetti, on the political dimension of his film:
I didn’t think it was necessary for the narrator to broadcast political messages to the audience. I just wanted to take a look at today’s Italian society, to give an account of it, as it is symbolized by the character of Claudio, and abstain from any judgement. This film expresses a certain leniency towards human beings.

Elio Germano on playing the role of Claudio:
The dramatic aspect of the character was difficult to grasp not only as an actor, but also as a human being. The grief that affects Claudio is also something I have had to deal with personally in a way. In Italy, the family is the only thing that gives us the strength to overcome our troubles.
