Spotlight on the Tribeca Film Festival

Today, the Festival de Cannes pays tribute to the Tribeca FIlm Festival, an event that was cofounded in 2001 by the actor, director and producer Robert De Niro, with the screening of A Bronx Tale. This New York event has become one of the world’s most prestigious independent film festivals.

In 2001, the president of the Jury Robert De Niro, along with the American producer Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, decided to found the Tribeca Film Festival. Created to boost the economy and the cultural life of Manhattan after the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, it is today one of the most prestigious film events in the world. With nearly 20 categories, including “Best Narrative Film” and “Best New Director of Narrative Film”, it also programmes shorts, documentaries and stories. Its purpose is to enable independent filmmakers to reach wider audiences and to put the City of New York on the map as a fertile ground for the creation of major cinematographic works. Since its creation, the Tribeca Film Festival has screened over 1,200 films from over 80 countries.

The Festival de Cannes will pay tribute to Tribeca’s 10th anniversary with a screening of A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s first film as a director. With the whole team from the Tribeca Film Festival in attendance, as well as the members of the jury and Thierry Frémaux, the filmmaker will talk about the significance of this New York event.
